Corporate Backgrounder
REBOL Technologies was founded in January 1997 by Carl Sassenrath. Its mission is to revolutionize the exchange
and interpretation of information on the Internet. The Company develops, markets, licenses and supports a new network
messaging language.
REBOL (pronounced "REB-ul") supports both the exchange and interpretation of information, offering
an easy way to share information and programs between people, applications, and computers. REBOL is compact, platform
independent, and functions over a network or on a single system. It is ideally suited for webmasters, programmers,
technicians, hobbyists, educators, experimenters, and anyone who seeks solutions to the various problems that they
face in the modern world of computing.
The full-time development of REBOL began two years ago, allowing the language to mature and strengthen without
code legacy issues. After a very successful Alpha test in November 1997, REBOL Technologies was incorporated in
March 1998 and received financial backing from Avalon Investments. Beta
testing began in August 1998 and the product was officially released on September 30, 1998, distributed via the
Internet as freeware.
Most users will find the REBOL language an alternative to popular scripting languages of today, such as Perl,
Python, Tcl/tk and for some uses, a substitute for HTML. However, the extensibility and power of the REBOL language
will also make it useful as an alternative to lower level programming languages such as C and Java.
REBOL has actually been in the works for the last 20 years. While creating the Amiga operating system and developing
numerous software products, Carl steadily pursued the "perfect" computer language. Having worked with
more than 50 languages along the way, Carl recognized that bits of perfection were already out there. On one end
of the continuum there are the academic successes found in languages like Scheme, Self, and Clu, and on the practical
side great accomplishments like Algol, Java, Ada, and others. In many ways REBOL takes the best of both. Unfortunately,
a lot of these past accomplishments have been lost in today's computing world.
REBOL Technologies is driven by the need to eliminate computing complexity. While file size and processing requirements
continue to grow out of control, users and developers are further enslaved by their computers. It seems that the
driving force behind improving hardware performance has been to overcome an ever-growing ineptitude in software
technology.
"Like our federal government, these complex software systems are now perpetuated by thriving bureaucracies
of non-thought, propelled by their own markets of desperate, inexperienced consumers who see no alternatives. We
hope that there are enough scattered outposts of rebels who believe as we do and refuse to bow to the 'empire'
of complexity. With a critical mass we can build our own future and return to what Personal Computing was meant
to be." -- Carl Sassenrath
